Gambling Reform CampaignerVarious Media Outlets, Petition Platforms, And Events May 2021 - PresentUnited KingdomMy husband Luke took his life in April 2021 after a gambling addiction after being sent regular free bets by gambling operators. In June 2021 I set up a government petition to end free bets which received more than 33,000 signatures and received a reply from the government. This marked the beginning of campaigning to change the UK’s gambling laws to ensure gambling is made safer through simple measures such as ending gambling advertising, ending inducements to gamble, and ensuring checks are in place so people do not lose more than they can afford.Notable campaign moments include:• Setting up a petition for the government to publish the gambling white paper to stop more gambling suicides that has received more than 80,000 signatures, and featured in a BBC “most-read” article• Featuring in the BBC One prime-time documentary with Paul Merson, Football, Gambling and Me.• Meeting with Nadine Dorries, the DCMS Secretary of State, to discuss gambling reform• Writing op-eds for the Guardian on the need for new gambling legislation• Being interviewed by major broadcasters including BBC, ITV, Radio 4, and Channel 4 News• Providing regular comments and interviews to national newspapers on gambling reform.
