Twice a week I get to depart from my forest conservation work to actually be IN the forest, engaging with the fabulous students at The Learning Center! Forest School is experiential, exploratory, outdoor learning at its very best. From fire-building and whittling, to rambling along the stream in the ravine, there is so much for the students to engage with and discover - rain, snow, or shine.

Courses taught included ES 250 "Environmental Education", ES 427 "People & Environment"- which explores our relationship with the environment both nationally and across the globe, and FS 102 "Nature Rx" - an academic writing and speaking development course centered around the topic of "nature deficit disorder" and the impacts of spending time outside in the virtual age.

At the Voyageur Outward Bound School I have instructed students, directed courses and trained staff in both expeditionary skills and character education. I primarily lead paddling courses for struggling teens and young adult leadership students in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), and dogsledding courses for young adults and adults, including veterans. Through the years my responsibilities have also included hiring new staff, training sled dogs, and developing curriculum for academic leadership expeditions and struggling teen programs.

At CTLC my role is to design and facilitate programs that provide skills and insight in teambuilding, communication, leadership, navigating change and conflict, among others. I have the privilege of working with a diverse range of groups comprised of students, faculty and professionals to build experiential components into their programs and courses in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Completed doctoral dissertation titled "The impact of winter climate change on fine root nutrient and water uptake in a northern forest ecosystem". Work was conducted primarily at the USDA-FS Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
