I taught 4th grade for two years with Teach for America, in a high crime, high poverty neighborhood just outside of Washington, DC. I loved it. I worked extremely hard to create engaging lessons and activities for my students, many of whom were well below grade level. I often used games in the classroom as well, which encouraged even the most reluctant students to come out of their shells. During my first year of teaching, my students improved, on average, two grade levels in reading. During my second year of teaching, my students scored record highs on their end-of-year state exams. I had never been prouder.To this day, I think of my students often, and their passion for learning and curiosity for the world around them inspire me every day. Since leaving the classroom, my aim has been to create innovative and engaging learning experiences, with the aim of one day bringing those solutions to the classroom.
