Provide academic advising to students at Sinclair Community College.
Through Sinclair Community College Career Services I provided intensive career assessment and counseling for eligible clients of The Job Center. This special project was offered from February 1 through June 30, 2010.
For the Miami Valley extension site of Nyack College, I provided student services primarily for students in our accelerated degree completion program (ADCP) but also for our seminary and certificate students. I also provided classroom, technical and curriculum support to faculty. For students, faculty and colleagues I was the “go to” person, answering questions, addressing concerns, solving problems and resolving issues. My favorite part of this position was seeing nervous and overwhelmed students transform into confident and competent professionals. Because this site was small, I continually coordinated multiple projects simultaneously each with specific deadlines, always searching for ways to improve processes for my own sake as well as for our students. I was the local registrar, academic advisor and lead instructor for the orientation course. For the 11 Ohio graduations I verified student completion and planned the ceremony complete with diplomas, regalia and academic tradition. I worked with students from start to finish!
Initially I took disparate services and built a cohesive set of career services for students, alumni, faculty and staff, and community members. I oversaw four employment programs, planned annual career fairs, and was active in the Chamber of Commerce to connect students and alumni with employers. Other services I provided include individual advising in career planning and job search strategies; presenting on career and job search topics to college classes and community organizations; maintaining an extensive career resource library; and publishing newsletters 4-6 times annually.
Funded through a federal Perkins grant, I developed and implemented a program of services for students in targeted academic programs. I provided career information and job search instruction, disbursed scholarships to eligible students and coordinated the annual assessments required for federal grant funding. As an essential component for sustaining the program, I wrote a portion of the proposal submitted annually to the Wyoming Department of Education.
Funded through a federal Perkins grant, I provided pre-enrollment services and personal coaching to high-risk adult students. Qualified students received guidance in career planning, initial academic advising, assistance with financial aid applications, and an introduction to academic culture. I also coordinated services and benefits for students with other college offices and community agencies.
As the Senior Admissions Counselor I was actively involved in recruiting students and making admission decisions. I implemented the strategic plan for prospect correspondence, managed a large prospect database, and composed copy for use in recruiting materials. While at Crown College, I redesigned the new student orientation program and initiated a proposal to increase admission standards and provide better academic support services to improve student success and persistence.
The curriculum combines human development and administration to prepare student services practitioners within higher education.
