I started at StoraageTek working in the in-house design department as the typesetter (before DTP we set type in long galleys that were then pasted up on boards). The dept. got its first Macintosh and since I was so efficient at my job, I had time to "play" with it. Before long, I became the network administrator and Macintosh production artist. I spearheaded the effort to get a Mac for each of the designers, and from that point on, managed the network and learned design at the same time. As the years went by, I was given more and more responsibility until I was considered a designer equal to anyone on the team.In 1996, I resigned as a staff designer when my daughter was born, and after 18 months, came back on as a contract designer working onsite. I wasn't able to come back on staff because of a hiring freeze.In 2004, I established my own freelance design business, working from home. I've been doing that successfully ever since.
