Alain Normand is an author, lecturer, teacher and expert in Emergency Management. He directed relief efforts in emergencies such as the Saguenay floods in 1996, the Quebec Ice Storm of 1998, the repatriation of Canadians from Haiti after the earthquake of 2010, and many more. He was an emergency management and business continuity consultant to numerous organizations including many Greater Toronto Area municipalities for a number of years. Now a resident of Brampton Ontario, he was the Emergency Manager for the municipality from 1999 to 2021. Past-President of the Ontario Association of Emergency Managers (OAEM), he has been a member of many committees including the CSA committee for the Z1600 national standard on EM and BCP, the IAEM Canada committee on higher education in EM, and the Ontario Emergency Management Doctrine committee. He teaches emergency management and business continuity at York University.Alain is also Senior Manager National Emergencies for ADRA Canada, the humanitarian arm of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and developing the Canadian Disaster and Emergency Response program with his wife Nicole. Altogether, he has spent more than thirty years of his life in Emergency Management in one form or another and brings both knowledge and experience of this growing field of expertise.In 2010, Alain was recognized as the top National Emergency Manager and awarded the Canadian award for Emergency Management. From 2011 to 2014, Alain was invited to provide series of lectures in China to help Chinese officials and academics develop an EM program based on the Canadian model. In April 2012, he was named honorary professor at the Chongqing Occupational Engineering and Technology Institute.In June 2019, the Canadian Risk and Hazard Network granted the Lifetime Achievement Award to Alain in recognition of his role in advancing the emergency management profession.
