For my PhD trajectory I am investigating the network dynamics of the circadian clock, which is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus in the brain. Most research about the circadian clock has only been performed in nocturnal species, whereas there is evidence that the circadian clock in diurnal species has fundamental differences. Because the amount of available data on the microscopic brain level for both nocturnal and diurnal species is sparse I’m using computational modelling techniques to mimic the network dynamics of the clock. I'm identifying similarities and differences in the networks of nocturnal and diurnal animals to develop novel strategies to manipulate and restore clock function in diurnal animals.
