Wherever The Stories Are

As long as I can remember, I dreamt of travelling the world and discovering other cultures, just like in the Jules Verne adventure novel Around the World in 80 Days. In the story the main character travels by train, on ships, in hot air balloons and on the back of an elephant through faraway countries. And I was determined to do the same when I grew up.I couldn’t wait to finish high school, move to Amsterdam and go to university. I chose to study Anthropology and Communication, because that would prepare me for my trip around the world. So I hurried to finish my degree.Since 2002, I have been interviewing brands around the world and publishing their stories in a book called 'Around the World in 80 Brands'. I was travelling the world, meeting brands with a purpose and people with a vision. I also gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures... I could finally call myself a brand anthropologist!

When you arrive in São Paulo for the first time, you don’t have a clue where to go and where not to go. It is huge, over 20 million people live here, spread over many different areas and neighborhoods.We start our exploration in the financial district, the area in São Paulo where all main companies are located. In Faria Lima, one of the main streets, we discover Octavio Café, a perfect meeting place with even more perfect coffee. “This will be our São Paulo office,” I say. “Good coffee, wifi, in the middle of the buzz, a terrace, what else do we need?"

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

We touch down at Abu Dhabi Airport in the late afternoon. Our personal driver Ahmed is waiting for us at arrivals, dressed in an impeccable uniform and holding a sign with our names on it. “Welcome to Abu Dhabi,” he says. “Your car is waiting.” Two porters take our suitcases; all we have to do is follow Ahmed outside where a white Rolls Royce is waiting for us. This is a perfect start.We drive to the Emirates Palace and pass the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, which looks like it is floating in the air in the light of the setting sun.The reason we are here is 'CoolBrands-storytelling-Expedition-Middle East', a project we launched several months ago with the aim discovering destinations and the Arab culture...

Cape Town Area, South Africa

I wake up and have to remember where I am. It’s Day 70 of my trip through Africa and I have seen and done so much that I am starting to lose track of where I am. I open the curtains and look out over a savannah. Oh yeah, that’s right, now I remember: I’m at the Bilila Lodge in the middle of Serengeti National Park. The sun is rising as I walk from the lodge to the main building, where I meet a group of Maasai security guards. They tell me that they are warriors who are here to protect me from the wild animals at night. After all, we are in the middle of the savannah. “We do the same in our village: we protect the sleeping women and children and the cattle. If you want I can show you our village and the way we live.”
