As Head of Platform Engineering my role is to provide a reliable developer platform to our customer engineering teams. This means treating our developer platform as a SaaS product, working with developers to highlight friction points in their workflows and identifying opportunities to introduce self serve mechanisms. A relentless drive for automation of both our infrastructure and application pipelines is a core principle along with developing mechanisms for fast feedback throughout the development process. As well as providing a consistent developer experience, my team and I provide support and advocacy to the engineers. We are currently undertaking a significant replatforming exercise. This means providing support and building capabilities utilising good architecture practices and tooling and ensuring services adhere to cloud native best practices.

As VP of Engineering I am responsible for all development, assurance, security and operations of our FinKit platform. The majority of the 70+ engineering function is based in Cardiff with additional resource based remotely and from partners in Turkey and India. Under my leadership we have worked relentlessly to provide a highly available, resilient and operable platform, guided by DevOps practices. Our key principles are based around making change easy and safe, removing friction in the software development lifecycle and getting valuable features available to our customers quickly, enabling them to delight their own consumers. As well as providing direction and leadership to engineering, my role requires that I work very closely with our product organisation to define the future direction of our platform. During this period of high growth an essential part of my role is to scale out our engineering capability while retaining the key behaviours and ways of working that define FinKit. I am currently heavily involved in the development of our Finkit for Open Banking product which will enable UK banks to meet their upcoming PSD2 obligations and drive further value from the longer term opportunities that OB presents.

As well as day to day operational management of development activities my main role is to lead the major re-factoring of our legacy platforms to a Microservices based architecture. To drive this activity I have introduced major new initiatives which are changing the development culture of the organisation and the way we work. Responsible for multiple teams based in distributed geographical locations.Some of my responsibilities include:- Provide leadership and vision for my engineering teams based in Cardiff and Chennai- Create and contribute to operational policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and best practices.- Analyse and assist development of product requirements and have accountability to develop software to meet those functional needs.- Review technical feasibility and work with team leads to develop timelines for product development.- Manage and produce product development estimates, resource allocation and scheduling.- Maintain reusable code for modular software and other components.- Recruit and mentor software engineering team members.- Lead planning and execution of project work plans, making ongoing revisions to meet changing needs.- Direct development team efforts to achieve team and product development goals, objectives and milestones.

The birth of my daughter and a desire to be based in South Wales rather than have to travel the length and breadth of the UK to support my clients (at least while my daughter was very young) lead me to apply for and later accept the role of Java Developer at Companies House. I was part of a team developing enhancements and new functionality for the Companies House Information Processing System (CHIPS). All projects were developed using Scrum in order to drive out maximum business benefit quickly.

At its peak I enjoyed overallresponsibility for 8 large projects running over 5 blue chip clients (in the insurance, telecoms and retail banking industry) with over 150 consultants based in sites all over the UK and a team of 10 in India.During my time in this role over half of all Spring IT Solutions revenues came under my remit. My strong technical background enabled me to gain the confidence of senior technical client stakeholders and my technical colleagues in order to get the best out of the team and produce outstanding results for my customers.
