A development role working on complex financial reports for Allianz Investment Management. Involved the use of Cognos Report Studio (v10) to build reports using MDX (Multi-Dimensional Expressions) against a DMR (Dimensionally Modelled Relational) model. A self-sufficient role where I managed my own workload in conjunction with the business analysts. Working to set release dates and dealing with testing directly. Initially based in Munich for 15 months, then working remotely.

I started at the FSA as a contractor on a project to migrate a BI system onto Cognos 8 - this required system/environment design and installation, ETL development, modelling and report writing. Various projects followed, which became more complex and required considerable resources - I moved into the role of design, technical and delivery lead - managing a team of developers. I then switched to a permanent position where I initially performed the role of team leader. Then I was seconded to Technical Operations to support the transition from FSA to FCA. I played a large role in delivering ways of working, processes and a framework for defining a BI "Centre-of-Excellence". My final role was that of Solution Designer and project leader for an out-sourced project that supported a new European directive. I performed so many different roles - from development work, to installation, support, training, mentoring, internal MI, project management, interviewing, test coordination and design. All of this work was done with the Cognos 10 BI products in an Oracle 11g environment, then moving to Oracle ODI (to replace the ETL) with Exadata.

I was initially employed as a Training Consultant, followed by a promotion to Senior Training Consultant and finally promoted to Principal Training Consultant. This was a revenue earning position focused on utilisation. I travelled extensively throughout the UK, Europe, Middle East and South Africa delivering training to customers and partners. I always delivered on quality and my knowledge and experience of the Cognos Business Intelligence products is extensive. I worked with all of the Cognos BI products (too many to list here) to a very detailed technical level of understanding - covering areas such as report development, modelling, administration, security, deployment and data warehouse development. I was also involved in "train-the-trainer" work as well as CBT development, in-house training systems preparation and liaison with course development in Ottawa. I was also given the ability to follow the TAP training program in order to gain Associate membership of the Institute of IT Trainers (IITT).

AM and Accounting systems were developed in-house with GIS package chosen "off-the-shelf" for Apple platform, which integrated with AM system. Role involved extensive travel throughout the UK, working closely with salespeople delivering demonstrations and technical support - in a variety of situations, one-to-one customer meetings, marketing events, trade shows and roadshows. Solid personal relationships were also developed over time with customers. I ran a small team looking after installations for the AM and GIS systems. Worked with UNIX (including administration and shell scripting), Accell IDS, Unify 2000 and Informix. Company "guru" for GIS system (Geo Navigator).

This job formed the “sandwich” part of my mathematics degree. It was at a time when the National Health Service (NHS) was divided into Regional Health Authorities (RHAs). I worked for Trent RHA, in Sheffield. Trent was the largest RHA covering Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire & South Yorkshire. I was part of a 5 person team responsible for “mathematical services” providing support to the “business” in all specialities - covering subjects such as Neonatal Intensive Care occupancy to ENT surgery D&D rates - the work was very varied and often involved on-site visits. I spent the last 6 months developing a nurse manpower planning system in Lotus Symphony. The application used 2 “algorithms” allowing short and long term planning. It was developed with the intention of deploying to the 12 District Health Authorities.
