I worked at Sasol Technology Research and Development in the Environmental Science and Engineering group. I complete a techno-economic evaluation of a novel water treatment technology for the purposes of debottlenecking the Secunda water treatment facility, which resulted in concreting the way forward for piloting of the water treatment technology. I carried out an extensive techno-economic assessment of diverse treatment opportunities for high calorific wastes identified with the GTL process. This involved procuring of pertinent information from technology suppliers and selecting a suitable treatment technology for the waste identified.I was the lead process engineer responsible for conducting test work on high density fly ash and brine slurries, i.e. paste, on a pilot plant scale. This involved the following responsibilities: close affiliations with technical support services [re-commission a paste pilot plant provided by Paterson and Cooke Consulting engineers]; provision of an operating envelope for the pilot plant as well as routine operation of the pilot plant; troubleshooting on instrumentation and rotating equipment. During the piloting work I was responsible for ensuring that the necessary sampling and laboratory testing of the final paste material was completed successfully by the technical officers.I completed a process design on high density slurry [i.e. paste] preparation and transportation facility for the Secunda Synfuels facility. The piloting provided rheological data for piping characteristics of the paste material. Consequently presented the work conducted on the project at the Global Sasol Technology R&D Conference in September 2012. Additionally the paste technology has been handed over to the process design department of Sasol Technology to determine the implementation possibilities within the current Secunda facility.

I conducted anaerobic toxicity assay testing on a variety of wastewaters within the Sasolburg facility in order to determine the efficacy of anaerobic treatment for each of the wastewatersFurther accountabilities included routine operation of laboratory scale anaerobic reactors which incorporated the tracer testing [establishment of regimes], mass balance reconciliation [in order to determine optimum operation] and identification of instrumentation issues. I also concluded an economic evaluation on the treatment of microalgae through anaerobic digestion in order to evaluate the economic feasibility of algal biomass as an energy source. The resulting report was used to evaluate the feasibility of using microalgae as an alternative energy source.I completed and reconciled mass balances on conventional activated sludge and membrane bioreactors. The mass balance reconciliation provided information in support of modelling functions within the Environmental Science and Technology group.
