My first major freelance contract was booking The Lemon Tree’s busy programme of music and comedy, writing the relevant brochure copy and overseeing marketing campaigns. In the five years of the contract, box office receipts increased substantially and active users of the venue more than doubled.

Initially employed to book and manage the new 500-capacity HQ venue, my role expanded to include booking shows in Whelans and The Olympia, Gaiety and Ambassador Theatres and co-ordinating Irish tours for acoustic artists.

Appointed as part of the initial 4-strong staff team, I assumed responsibility for booking music and comedy and was instrumental in the venue’s rapid rise to become one of the most important and innovative small-mid scale venues in the UK. Duties included negotiating contracts; liaising with agents and artists; overseeing all marketing and print production and design; raising sponsorship; contributing to all aspects of venue policy and operation,; meeting and monitoring budgets; appointing, supervising and managing all staff; and deputising for the director.

Assessing funding applications, liaising with partner companies and promoters and hands-on administration of several events including a science festival, World Press Photo exhibition, a festival of contemporary Hungarian art and culture and a major outdoor retrospective performance by Irish folk legends De Dannan.
