* Recieved a Hooper Undergraduate Research Award (2014) to study the virulence of Dendroctonus-associated fungi on Pinus ponderosa in Flagstaff, AZ by collecting bark beetles and fungal samples to identify damage caused by fungi found on different species and genders of bark beetles- Captured Dendroctonus and Ips spp. bark beetles in Lindren funnel traps using hormone scent packets- Maintained and collected from the Lindgren funnel traps tri-weekly April 2013 - October 2013- Identified captured bark beetles to genus, species, and sex- Assembled basic habitat use, age and sex structure, habitat preference (tree species, location, and location on the tree), and harvest characteristics based on collection data- Sampled resin flow over 24 hours to determine tree's resistance to infection- Inoculated trees with bark beetle fungi- Studied recently published material on the subject to qualify results and methods- Collected P. ponderosa needles at mid-canopy before dawn and at noon every other week.- Sampled resin over a 24-hour period.- Cored trees at 4.5 ft (breast height) to estimate their ages.- Measured the diameter at breast height (DBH) of the sample trees.- Engineered sap-flux probes according to specific directions- Operated "pressure bomb" to determine water flow through the xylem- Wired solar-powered batteries to sap flux system in the field- Sampled tree cores and aged the study trees- Compiled and summarized data into research document, Powerpoint, and poster for presentation- Presented results at the Northern Arizona University Undergradute Research and Design Symposium (2014 and 2015)
