I designed experiments, collected data, and created predictive models for signal (grayscale) intensity, collaborating with a team of three biomedical engineers to produce optimized prototype VFIs capable of multiplex biomarker detection. These prototypes will eventually be manufactured for field-grade use in deployed locations by military and Department of Defense civilian personnel for reliable pathogen detection during a biological attack.This research project led to a joint publication: Chen, P., Gates-Hollingsworth, M., Pandit, S., Park, A., Montgomery, D., AuCoin, D., & Zenhausern, F. (2019). Paper-based Vertical Flow Immunoassay (VFI) for detection of bio-threat pathogens. Talanta, 191, 81-88.2) Facial recognition parity - This project was sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). I developed an experimentation and analysis procedure for convolutional neural networks trained on various splits of custom face databases to evaluate model "fairness" - whether there was a disparity in how reliably a person could be identified based on attributes such as race and gender. Strong evidence of gender and racial model accuracy bias, heavily influenced by the training data, was found and presented to DHS leadership. -

I completed my M.S. in Operations Research with a focus in statistics and discrete-event simulation. Afterwards, I completed two operational assignments:1) Commander, Operations Analysis Flight, 86th Fighter Weapons Squadron, Eglin AFB, FL (March 2010 - April 2013):I supervised ten military personnel and was responsible for planning, scheduling, and executing 15 weapon system evaluations. I led data collection, analysis, and technical reporting (written reports and presentations) for 352 precision-guided munitions valued at $60M. I also coordinated operations for over 600 deployed personnel at 17 geographically separated bases. As a result of these evaluations, 41 critical findings were reported directly to the Air Force Chief of Staff, leading to significant improvement in warfighter tactics and lethality.2) Lead Special Access Programs (SAP) Analyst, Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, Detachment 4, Peterson AFB, CO (April 2013 - June 2015):I guided a six-member military and civilian test team through several operational test planning and execution events for two space communications systems. I forged the test concept and data analysis plan for a $1B SAP and reduced the original test duration by 25%. I directed four test events and saved $100K by leveraging system performance data observed in developmental testing.
