Obtaining his PhD in 2017, Dr Anthony Evans is Polymer composites researcher at the University of Nottingham, with expertise in composites manufacturing, automation and machine design. Recent work has surrounded research and development of an Automated Dry Fibre Placement machine for high rate deposition, up to 3m/s, of 2D carbon fibre preforms. Anthony was responsible for the entirity of the machine design, from CAD to commisioning. This includes designing the hardware for manufacturing in-house, assembly within the workshop, programming of the PLC and NC by TwinCAT, the user interface and HMI in C# and real-time virtual manufacturing simulations and real-time machine visualisations using the Unity engine. This also incorporates large quantities of data transfer between the machine and servers and closed-loop control systems for temperature, pressure and motion adjustments.Outside of this full-time career, he has further experience as a part-time Race Engineer for MacG Racing and has commisioned personal projects such as designing and manufacturing a CNC Router using a Arduino micro processor.
