On 1 August 2018 the new Victorian Marine and Coastal Act 2018 came into effect and the inaugural Marine and Coastal Council was appointed under the Marine and Coastal Act 2018. I chair this council of seven excellent members with broad expertise related to the functions set out in the Act. The Act enables protection of the coastline and the ability to address the long-term challenges of climate change, population growth and ageing coastal structures. It ensures that partners work together to achieve the best outcomes for Victoria’s marine and coastal environment.

I work in the space between great research and excellent public value outcomes - integrating them both. I'm involved in the Centre for Anthropogenic Pollution Impact and Management (@CAPIM), the National Centre for Coasts and Climate Change (NCCC) as well as other developing initiatives. My research foci are better translation of environmental science knowledge into use by decision-makers, new and emerging environmental monitoring capabilities, pollution detection and enabling community involvement and access in decision-making involving environmental science (in particular through active building of Citizen Science), environmental impacts (plastics and other pollutants), and marine and coastal adaptation to climate change. I am working to build capability and an evidence-based to show how powerful an impact well crafted science can have in increasing public value. I was privileged to Chair the Science Panel of the Victorian Coastal Council. More like a summit than a panel, it draws together over 40 multi-disciplinary experts from across Australia with disciplines sharing one common thread: they all touch the coast or marine environments. Our role is to provide proactive as well as requested evidence, assessment, options and information to the Victorian Coastal Council on matters of importance to the Council.

The Victorian Coastal Council (VCC) is appointed by the State Government of Victoria under the Coastal Management Act 1995 to advice the Minister of Environment, Climate Change & Water on strategy coastal and marine planning and other issues. The vision of the Victorian Coastal Strategy (led by the VCC) is "a healthy coast, appreciated by all, now and into the future".

As the head of the Applied Sciences function of EPA (>over $18 million budget and >95 people) we deliver the applied sciences required by Victoria's environmental regulator. We maintain strong internal capability in air, water and land contamination sciences as well as engineering capabilities that focus on the major pollution producing industrial and technological sectors in Victoria. We focus our abilities into synthesing broad data and information inputs, regulatory intelligence and social research as well as being able to communicate our scientific and engineering expertise to broad and diverse audiences. Being a small and flexible group we collaborate closely with expertise from our University Partners, industry groups and citizen scientists. The ultimate aim is to create better environmental outcomes for a prosperous and liveable Victoria.

Leading a major reform of EPAs science and engineering capability taking a traditional strength and building on it with people learning to use more data, broaden our reach of capabilities, tell better stories and work in collaborative excellence with their colleagues inside and outside Victoria's environmental regulator.

I led the R&D and Knowledge Management sections of the organisation through a period of creativity and maturing organisationally, as well as a period of great culture change, and a chance to really grow as a leader of science. Great stories were told of science in this period.

This leadership position was about starting to build a case for future change and starting to refine future models of science delivery for an important environmental organisation who decision-making is based on science and engineering... all within a challenging leadership environment that afforded many opportunities to test and learn real leadership.

I was on the Board of this exciting innovation partnership between PACIA, Monash University, CSIRO and EPA Victoria. This A$25 million Centre (known in short as VCSCM) is designed to encourage business productivity and competitiveness, providing dedicated resources focused on industrial research and manufacturing processes for manufacturers in the chemicals and food chemicals business. AMSA is the peak body for Australian marine scientists with a membership of over 1000 scientists across fields and across Australia. I was learning the ropes before becoming President.

I led the marine science and research program for Parks Victoria following the implementation of a system of 24 marine protected areas in Victoria. I built it from a set of plans in a document to a lively, robust and well communicated marine science program that has left a legacy for future scientists and managers. Management decisions and directions demostrably changed based on the science we created and shared.

A great year helping 1st, 2nd and 3rd year minds grow and learn about biology, ecology and related areas. Always a short-term contract, the best fun was seeing new knowledge and understand emerge as the rich stories of the detail within science were told.

Post-doc; student mentor; laboratory builder; general facilitator of lab life; researcher into the impacts of oil industry outputs on marine life in California; active enquirer into all new pieces of science related to the seas off California; founding member of the Santa Cruz Roos Australian Football Club (Grand finalists in the 2008 USA AFL Nationals).
