Dr. Calise has published extensively in the area of adaptive flight control and adaptive guidance. During the early part of his career he specialized in the application of singular perturbation theory to problems in optimal guidance of aircraft and missiles. Early in the 90’s he began working in the area of neural network based adaptive control, with application to fault tolerant control of aircraft, UAV flight control, and robust control of guided munitions. Under AFOSR and AFRL sponsorship he developed highly specialized methods of adaptive guidance and adaptive flight control for purposes of vision-only based formation flight control and obstacle avoidance, and active flow control. He also has had research sponsorship from NASA Marshal in the area of launch vehicle guidance and adaptive flight control. Through his consulting activities, he has supported Phase-I and Phase-II SBIR efforts funded by WPAFB in the area of advanced adaptive guidance and control of launch vehicles. More recently in 2008-2010 he was the principal investigator for a Phase-I and a Phase-II SBIR efforts in the area of adaptive guidance applied to missile interception for the Army Space and Missile Defense Command. Since 2004 Dr. Calise has worked for Atair Aerospace as a Senior Scientist, where he has developed highly specialized adaptive guidance algorithms for autonomously guided parafoils, and he also developed an integrated low cost inertial navigation system. From Sept. 2015 - Sept. 2016 he co-founded and worked as Chief Scientist where he worked on guidance, navigation, and flight control of stratospheric solar powered aircraft. Currently he has resumed his consulting practice.
