Second Nature works with colleges and universities across the US to help make the principles of sustainability the foundation of all learning, practice, and collaboration with local communities. Second Nature organizes and supports the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (http://presidentsclimatecommitment.org/), a network of 680+ colleges & universities in all 50 states & the District of Columbia working on eliminating their greenhouse gases from campus operations and ensuring that all graduates will have the knowledge and skills to help all of society do the same.

Founded the university-wide Center for Environmental Management and catalyzed the development of 5 graduate and one undergraduate environmental programs. Founded the award-winning Tufts Environmental Literacy Institute in 1989 that helped integrate environmental and sustainability perspectives in over 175 courses. He also organized the effort that resulted in the internationally acclaimed Talloires Declaration of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future in 1990 now signed by over 400 presidents and chancellors in over 50 countries.

The Department of Environmental Protection is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
