Undergraduate Research Assistant - Laser-Thermal Propulsion And Laser-Sustained Plasma

Montreal, Qc, Ca

Propulsion Lead And Launch Director

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

- Leading the Propulsion team's efforts in launching a Student-Research and Developed (SRAD) class O hybrid rocket engine at Launch Canada 2024- Directing launch operations at the Launch Canada 2024 competition as Launch Director- Directing hybrid engine testing and characterization as Test Director at the team's student-designed engine test site- Leading R&D campaign through modelling and prototyping for a fully-SRAD high-thrust hybrid engine designed for a 60,000 ft apogee rocket

Propulsion Project Lead - Run Valve & Launch Infrastructure

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The Student Researched and Developed (SRAD) run valve acts as the gate between the oxidizer tank and the combustion chamber of our hybrid engine. It is a pneumatically actuated valve, meaning that it uses pressurized gas, in our case nitrous oxide, to open. During this year's design cycle, I will be leading the run valve project, carrying out the follow tasks:- Design a new run valve for the rocket according to various functional, technical, and competition requirements- CAD the various parts and sub-assemblies of the run valve system using Siemens NX- Optimize the performance, size, and weight of the valve (through FEA) while keeping in mind ease of manufacturing and assembly in the rocket, as well as cost- Source the necessary material and manufacturing for the system’s parts- Conduct assembly tests in rocket configuration, as well as cold flow and hot fire tests to validate the valve’s performance and integrity- Welcome in new recruits to the team at the beginning of the school year, providing them adequate knowledge for them to hit the ground running on design and testing workIn parallel wtih this role, I will work on the integration of the oxidizer fill system to our SRAD launch rail. I will also supervise new members as they bring improvements to the launch rail, such as an integrated deflector plate to shield the base of the tower from hot exhaust gases and an antenna arm. Finally, as a test site operator trained in hybrid engine safety, as well as nitrous oxide safety, I will participate in the operation of cold flow and hot fire tests at our student-built engine test site on McGill's MacDonald Campus.

Propulsion Project Lead - Launch Rail

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

My co-lead and I, along with our project team, carried out the continuation of the launch rail project to completion, while finishing under budget and ahead of schedule, with our first fully-integrated assembly test almost three months before competition. This is MRT's first student reached and developed launch rail. Some of its notable features include:- Fast assembly and disassembly to facilitate transportation and competition procedures- Wide range of launch angles, surpassing Spaceport America Cup requirements (65 degrees to 85 degrees) - Levelling system at the base to ensure precise launch angle measurement and stable flightMain tasks:- Oversee the design, assembly, and testing of the launch rail's sub-assemblies- Send out material and machining orders while respecting the project's budget- Work with the Finite Elements Analysis team to examine various load cases- Participate in the operation and upgrading of the engine test site

Propulsion General Member - Actuated Vent Valve

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The actuated vent valve allows venting of any surplus nitrous oxide in order to maintain an ideal run tank pressure inside the rocketTasks:- Design brackets to fix the actuated vent valve and dump valve inside the rocket, keeping in mind the various loading conditions induced by the flight- Work with Solidworks and Siemens NX to produce parts, assemblies, and drawings- Participate in engine test site trips for cold flows and hot fire attempts

Nserc Undergraduate Student Research Assistant - Rotating Detonation Engine

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Research project: Design of a Continuous Flow Rotating Detonation Engine Facility at Concordia UniversityThe rotating detonation engine (RDE) provides a novel form of propulsion, utilizing detonation waves to convert chemical energy from the fuel/oxidizer mixture into thrust with more efficiency than a conventional gas turbine or rocket engine. My task consisted of designing and undertaking the construction of a new RDE testing rig at Concordia University, from the plumbing to the control system. As part of my role, I also get the chance to:- Participate in the operation of engine tests such as cold flows and hot fires- Re-design the test rig’s plumbing system and procedures to optimize testing times and safety- Send out material orders and machining requests during the setup of the testing facility- Work with Arduino and C++ for testing and optimization of the control system- Conduct research on the RDE, detonation physics, and gas dynamicsI will continue working for this research group part-time during the school year, helping out with engine tests and writing facility reports.
