Returning back to clarification as a reliability engineer allowed me to focus on long term projects that I was not able to complete as the area engineer. Armed with coding knowledge gained from my secondment to the digital team, I have been able to automate the extraction, manipulation and analysis of SAP data. The use of technology in conducting reliability engineering has greatly improved my efficiency and accuracy in prioritising, implementing & monitoring defect elimination.

Clarification separates mud from pregnant liquor as part of the Bayer process. The process is abrasive and high scaling requiring significant work to counteract. Clarification consists of flat bottom tanks, conical base tanks, centrifugal pumps, GEHOs, classifiers, plate heat exchangers and Kelly filters.

The RPMS team executed tank & vessel turnarounds across the Worsley Alumina Refinery. I provided break in, reliability & statutory support for all shell & tube heaters & associated vessels across site.

Digestion area incorporates the mills and consists of a number of vessels, shell and tube heat exchangers and pumps which operate at elevated temperature and pressures. The main role of the reliability engineer is to maximise equipment availability while minimising operational and maintenance costs. Mills area comprises of a number of rod mills, tanks, pumps, overhead traveling cranes, monorails and heat exchangers (direct contact & jacketed pipe). The area is subjected to high wear rates, bogging and scaling which is exposed to slurry, caustic soda, acid and steam services. My main role as area engineer is to ensure the maintenance and operation of equipment is conducted within Australian and international standards. Rio Tinto graduate program ran for 2 years where I rotated through a number of different areas within the Gove alumina refinery. Principal engineering consisted of design work on small projects to Australian and international standards. During my redside I covered area engineer for 4 months providing engineering support for vessel replacement, tank relocation and structure assessments. During my steam power station I covered for the area engineer for 8 months providing assistance regarding repair and maintenance methodologies on boilers, turbines, diesel generators and water treatment plant.
