Desire to solve all problems.As a child I always dreamed of becoming an astronaut. The idea of building rockets and going to space was completely exhilarating and I knew long before graduating high school that that was the path for me. This made my high school college search simple. As my parents required me to stay in Ohio, I went to the top-rated engineering school in Ohio and pursued a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I knew this pursuit would be difficult, but I believed I had the drive and intelligence to accomplish it. By the end of my college experience I had become the leader of my senior project as well as a coach and national competitor on my taekwondo team. I felt like I worked hard through school and I was ready for my next steps. With a pep in my step, I started scouring the internet for jobs. This job search quickly soured when I learned that I had pigeonholed myself into a very narrow set of options. I felt like I could learn and do a wide range of jobs, like I could solve a wide range of problems, but the job market for Aerospace Engineers was narrower than I would have liked. I decided to go back and get a master’s in another area in order to show the world I was much more than an Aerospace Engineer. I went back and got a Master’s in Information Systems.This second master’s began my endless pursuit to prove that my abilities are wide ranging and that I can solve just about any problem that one can throw at me. Since I graduated I have taught myself multiple programming languages, taught myself AWS, taught myself to make electronics using an Arduino, taught myself Unity, and passed the Mensa test, all in the pursuit to prove the problem is irrelevant.In my attempt to learn to program I decided to create the most complex program that I could think of. I went in with the goal of creating a program that a middle schooler could use to write a program that could do my entire job. Over the next 9 months I worked tirelessly at this goal and was able to create a new programming language that involved minimal to no typing, and you could write a program to do my entire job. Mission accomplished!Recently I saw that the company was having problems with the back-end development as well, and, as I usually do when I see a problem, I tried to solve it. Not knowing what AWS was at the time, I was able to take Pluralsight and Udemy classes and get 3 certifications over the next 3 months. Noticing my fast improvement in this area, the CEO promoted me to AWS System Administrator.
