Supervision of students on the MA Mass Communication programme. Having recently returned to the UK from a teaching and research post in Cairo, Egypt, I am in a unique position to manage UG and PG dissertation projects that focus on international media contexts, particularly as those relate to the Global South. My background in community media, urban development and filmmaking enables crossover into project-based supervision and teaching. I work closely with LJMU colleagues on the allocation of projects to specific staff members, as well as the maintenance of high standards of supervision, marking and pastoral care.

Based in Cairo, delivering UK university education to Middle Eastern students, specifically in the Media and Communication programme area. I design and develop curricula via programme planning, module validation, and the incorporation of research-led, problem-based learning sessions for students across subject areas. As a UK staff member my teaching, research and administrative duties are supplemented by equality and diversity assurance roles, including the maintenance of UK QAA and Advance HE standards via continuous work with our faculty’s validating partners at London South Bank University. My research is widely published in academic journals and edited collections. For the past two years I have been investigating the Creative Economy of the MENA and GCC region, taking the emerging Saudi Arabian film industry as a primary point of study. I have been carrying out qualitative interviews with film industry workers inside Saudi Arabia, analysing industry development, changing labour conditions and shifting patterns of audience engagement in the context of socio-cultural liberalisation and rapid “post-oil” economic diversification. My aim is to develop world-leading research that contributes to debates on shifting cultural dynamics and the development of socially equitable film and media industries in Global South contexts.

Module leader on Digital Cultures for the MA in Mass Communication. The co-ordination, design and delivery of postgraduate curricula and taught sessions. The MA programme attracted students from a range of domestic and international backgrounds. I worked concurrently as the programme’s Collaborative Link Tutor in order to adapt the programme for international markets. Specifically, I worked with international colleagues at Westford University College in Dubai, the Unicaf scholarship programme in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Management Development Institute of Singapore. During the Covid-19 period I took on a further responsibility for developing a distance-learning variant of the MA in Mass Communication.

Research Assistant to Professor Kate Oakley (University of Glasgow) on an ESRC funded project which explored the ways in which cultural work can facilitate ideas of the “good life” beyond material consumption. As a researcher, I analysed the development of localised creative economies throughout the UK, and carried out interviews with media industry professionals so as to understand the realities of creative labour and employment. I also conducted focus groups with young people from different socio-economic backgrounds on the barriers they face in accessing creative industries employment. I used this data to produce a co-authored book chapter and two sole authored journal articles.
