Passionate and unquenchable thirst for learning and self-improvementWhen my brother suggested I go to Engineering school I was like “they teach you how to design stuff right? That sounds fun”. Never mind that my two worst subjects in high school were math and science. By year two, I was one bad semester away from being kicked out of school. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, I just didn’t know much math, science, or how to study efficiently. This was the turning point, I had to learn how to learn. From here on out, the name of the game was to force success through perseverance. Not only did I turn my grades around and get my BS in Mechanical Engineering, I went on to get my MS in Mechanical Engineering. My appetite for bettering myself began to snowball as I started branching off into controls and PLC programming. As a mechanical engineer at Laco Technologies, my boss took notice of my nack for programming and offered to transition me to a controls engineer. I accepted and never looked back. This move gave me the unique skill to solve problems from a mechanical and controls perspective. After spending a few years bringing Thermal Vacuum Chambers to life, I made a switch to manufacturing automation at Autoliv Inc. I now live in a world of PLC's, and Robots to automate the assembly of vehicular airbags. My fast pace work environment doesn’t slow down when I come home in the evening. As a father of two young girls and a husband of a wife who also works full time, it’s a race to get all the household responsibilities finished and spend some time with family before putting the kiddos to bed and lying down for what feels like a quick nap before starting it all over again.

Controls EngineerLaco Technologies Feb 2017 - Sep 2021Salt Lake City, Ut, UsDesign the electrical panels and program PLC software. This includes drawing a wire schematic using Solidworks Electrical, model the panel using solidworks mechanical, producing panel layout drawings, and bill of materials. This is done for the following applications:Standard Product Development: Vacuum Ovens, High Vacuum Bakeout ChambersCustom Systems: Thermal Vacuum Systems, Altitude simulation systems, Vacuum Ovens, Degas ChambersAccomplishments:Completed the electrical design and program for new standard products. Specifically vacuum ovens, and high vacuum bake out chambers. Wrote a PID algorithm in ladder logic for temperature control using heaters and LN2Wrote an altitude simulation algorithm to maintain a constant, user defined, altitude rate of change from -2000 feet to 200,000 feet. Wrote a pressure simulation algorithm to maintain a constant, user defined, pressure rate of change. Able to interface with multiple chiller brands for temperature control using thermal fluidsDeveloped configurable sub-assemblies in Solidworks Mechanical to streamline the 3D design of electrical panels. Acquired Skills:Thorough understanding of electrical power distribution: single phase, 3 phase wye, 3 phase delta, etcStandard electrical design practices. How to correlate pressure and altitude, up to 130 miles in elevation.System designs using cryogenics: dewers, valves, fittings, etcThermal Fluid Heat TransferThermal Chillers -
Mechanical EngineerLaco Technologies May 2014 - Feb 2017Salt Lake City, Ut, UsDesigned vacuum chambersCustom systems is Laco's specialty. As a Mechanical Engineer, I was required to design, model, and oversee the manufacture of various types of vacuum chambers such as: High Vacuum Chambers, Leak Detection Systems, Altitude Simulation Chambers, and Degas Chambers. Achievements:Shipped 3 to 5 custom vacuum chambers/systems each month. Achieved vacuum pressures of <1E-7 torr in high vacuum chambers.Developed various ways to heat products in a vacuum chamber to >200CDeveloped an algorithm of calculating the pressure drop of N2 gas, across several parallel pipes, located on all six sides of a chamber. Acquired Skills:Vacuum Technology: Gauges (Pirani, Cold/Hot Cathode), Pumps (Blowers, Turbo Molecular, Cryogenic, Scroll, Rotary Vain), Valves, High Vacuum, Conductance, Mean Free Path, etc. Helium Leak Detection: Designed entire systems built to find helium leaking out of partsPressure Drop Analysis: Designed channeled platens for thermal fluids to travel through, designed high viscous fluid transfer systems using vacuum forces, designed channeled platens and shrouds for thermally controlled N2 gas to travel through. Weld Design: Understand what kinds of welds to use to avoid warping and withstand pressure and thermal stresses. Attention to Detail: The devil is in the details. Failure to account for the details in the design phase will result in expensive and time consuming fixes at the tail end of the job. -
Mechanical EngineerThermo Fisher Scientific Jul 2012 - May 2014Waltham, Ma, UsProduct development of the Single Use Fermentor (SUF) for the medical industry. Mu primary role was to design an exhaust condensor that served two purposes, maximum product reclaimation that had evaporated in the exhaust, and increase the life of the system filter by preventing unwanted particles in the exhaust. -
Design Engineer InternThermo Fisher Scientific May 2011 - May 2012Waltham, Ma, UsDesigned and program a factory acceptance test box.I worked with the team that managed the Single Use Bioreactors (SUBs). The reactors were controlled by an electrical box that needed a quick and easy way to verify it was built and functioning correctly. My role was to design a control panel that would plug into the SUBs and run a series of tests to verify everything worked correctly. -
Dynamic Systems And Control Lab InstructorUtah State University Sep 2010 - Dec 2010Logan, Utah, UsUsing Simulink and Matlab, I Taught students how to apply PID control theory using motors, tachometers, and potentiometers. -
Composite Technician AssistantSpace Dynamics Laboratory Aug 2008 - Sep 2010N Logan, Ut, UsLayered pre-impregnated carbon fiber composites onto molds. Applied vacuum pressures on the molds and cured the resin inside an autoclave which used LN2 to pressurize to 100 psig. After curing, I added metal fittings to the composite components using eqoxy. The components then went through cryogenic testing. We used liquid nitrogen and liquid helium to bring the compenents down to 17 kelvin. The finished products are being used as structural members for the thermal management system of the James Webb Space Telescope.
