Since competing my doctorate in 1992, I have worked mainly in the UK academic sector, with a gap between 1995 and 2004 to look after my partner as well as working as a house restorer and interior decorator. In 2001-2 I worked as a book buyer for the South Bank Centre, London. My early research on J. H. Prynne was barely recognized at the time and regarded as an eccentric occupation; it has since become a highly productive area of research in contemporary poetics. For me, it was the starting point for a radical reassessment of 'late modernism', and I have become known internationally as a theorist and historian of the transition from modenism to postmodernism. As a graduate student, I 'wasted' professional time founding and co-editing fragmente: a magazine of contemporary poetics at a time when creative initiative was somewhat disregarded. The journal became influential on the Anglo-American poetry scene and I continue to believe strongly that the 'market' for literary and critical work should be created rather than merely responded to. That said, in the last few years I have published in leading international peer-reviewed journals such as Modernism / Modernity and Sub Stance. My poetry has appeared in various magazines and anthologies, as well as a number of chapbooks and collections. See my Shearsman Books author page for details.I have extensive experience of teaching across the English and American Literature curriculum at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with specialisms in Literary Theory, Modernism, Poetry and Poetics, Creative Writing and Film Studies. I am highly experienced in course design and assessment and have a successful record of postgraduate supervision. As a writer and former editor, I have strong copy-editing and design skills and would be at home in a publishing environment. My understanding of learning strengths and weaknesses and an ability to communicate with students makes me a good candidate for graduate recruitment.
