The duties for the role of Regulatory Paralegal cover the investigation of Regulatory Concerns raised against a registrant through to a hearing. This is all done under the supervision of a qualified Solicitor. My caseload varies from straightforward one witness cases to complex multiple witness cases with extensive documentation.I am the main point of contact with witnesses on the cases I am investigating. I interview witnesses for the purposes of a witness statement and draft their witness statement. I occasionally prepare instructions to Counsel after the investigation has concluded and we require Counsel’s advice for taking the case to a hearing. I liaise with key external and internal stakeholder over the course of an investigation, such a Local Authorities for documents, the client for their instructions and with Counsel during hearings. I have filed documents with the High Court. I am responsible for ensuring proper service of documents on registrants for their final hearings, case management meetings, interim order reviews and High Court Extensions. I also share some responsibility with Solicitors for budget management of my cases. Part of my role includes delegating non-chargeable tasks to our admin team where appropriate

The duties of this role are varied. I assemble Court. Liaise with counsel, to help keep the Judge and Court Clerk informed of what is happening. Ensuring members of the public observe Court rules, including coronavirus regulations. Swearing in witnesses giving evidence. Ensuring special measures protocols are followed for witnesses that require them. Acting as a jury bailiff during jury deliberations. Chairing the daily team meetings when required. Inviting fee paid judges to the next day’s cases.Most of my time is spent in court during trials. This allows me to see the process of jury trials, from the beginning to completion. It also allows me the chance to observe the way counsel conducts their cross examination, submissions, and applications. I also have working knowledge of the Crown Court Digital Case System (DCS), alongside some training on the evolution of the DCS, Common Platform, that is to be rolled out nationally.

Agency work. Contracted to HM Courts and Tribunal Services. I was in the Civil section.Whilst contracted with HMCTS as an agency worker, I provided general administrative support. This role provided me with experience using and maintaining a case management system; taught me the importance of proper file management; and allowed me to familiarise myself with the paperwork involved in filing claims. There was also an element of client care, within the remit of the impartiality required of the Courts, when handling any queries from claimants, defendants or their respective counsel.
