Modeling, including thermodynamics and kinetics, and batch reactors are used to run experiments aimed at understanding how to constrain its kinetics for application as a means of carbon sequestration. The models used in PHREEQC, CrunchTope, and R give insight into the thermodynamics and kinetics of dissolution of olivine and precipitation of secondary phases. The models also give information on the solution chemistry of our batch reactor systems. Experiments contain olivine in an aqueous solution that is left overtime to dissolve. Afterwards, the solid and solution are separated and analyzed. The solid is measured with powder XRD and SEM-EDS (some original powder is saved and analyzed too). IC and ICP-OES have been used to monitor solution chemistry. Olivine was characterized using lithium metaborate fusion.
