I am a clinical psychologist by training. For the past three decades, I have been a professor of psychology at Keene State College (University System of New Hampshire). Until a few years ago, I also maintained a small private practice in the greater Boston area. I have a longstanding interest in hope that emerged during my undergraduate years and never abated! My interest in research and statistics led me to develop hope assessments for youth and adults, a scale to capture nine varieties of adult hopelessness, as well as hope measures for the workplace and for the prison environment. In 2011, I was asked to create a hope workshop for youth in Haiti, following a devastating earthquake. Over the years, I have refined this workshop. Initially, we used professional counselors to run the workshop. I received an NIH grant in 2015 to evaluate the feasibility of using advanced psychology students as the "hope providers". The experiment was a great success. The high school students who received the intervention reported significantly higher levels of hope, less depression, and greater self-acceptance. I created a second form of the workshop to go along with the standard version, a "hip hope" variety that incorporates songwriting and group performance. Several years ago, I began to envision a hope institute. After months of planning, The Hope Institute was launched in February 2022 as a 501 (c) 3, non-profit. The goal is to bring more hope into the world by advancing an integrative approach that we call the "critical M.A.S.S.".
