My initial responsibility was managing the QA laboratory but I was quickly given additional responsibilities. The head of the R&D department quickly caught sight of my work and had me transferred to my employer's head quarters to assist with R&D. Although this work was not engineering related, it was quite possible the most rewarding position I have held. My main responsibility was to provide mentally disabled teenagers with real-world work experience in order to prepare them for full time jobs. Each employee under my supervision had a full time job prior to completion of the program. This position wasn't without its challenges, but I was able to grow as a leader and as a person in order to overcome those challenges. This was my first experience performing professional laboratory work. Although I started out simply crushing grapes with four other employees, I quickly excelled. The Laboratory Supervisor placed me in charge of all laboratory operations, including quality testing and new product research. When the season was coming to an end, the Laboratory Supervisor requested my assistance in designing a new laboratory. Permanent employment was offered at this time, but the new laboratory wasn't expected to be completed for another 12-18 months. This started out as a throw-away project that had already had nearly 5 years invested into it. 3 professors and half a dozen graduate students had tried doping titanium dioxide with many different chemicals in an attempt to track man-made titanium dioxide through the environment. The problem was that doping titanium dioxide always changed its surface properties. I was told to repeat what had already been attempted in order to get experience working with laboratory equipment. No one expected an undergraduate student to provide anything of substance. After a little research, I suggested making a new particle. It was a core and shell particle in which the shell was titanium dioxide and the shell was lanthanum oxide. By this time, I had gained significant support from the staff and was allowed to try developing these particles. Not only was I able to develop the particles, my research helped lead to a patent and additional funding for the project. In one short summer I went from cleaning sheds to being a full-time commercial painter. As a painter, my first tasks were cleaning windows, mixing paints, and moving drops, but it didn't take long for me to catch the eye of our customers and ultimately the owner of the company.
