Undergraduate Research Assistant

Oregon State University

This started out as a throw-away project that had already had nearly 5 years invested into it. 3 professors and half a dozen graduate students had tried doping titanium dioxide with many different chemicals in an attempt to track man-made titanium dioxide through the environment. The problem was that doping titanium dioxide always changed its surface properties. I was told to repeat what had already been attempted in order to get experience working with laboratory equipment. No one expected an undergraduate student to provide anything of substance. After a little research, I suggested making a new particle. It was a core and shell particle in which the shell was titanium dioxide and the shell was lanthanum oxide. By this time, I had gained significant support from the staff and was allowed to try developing these particles. Not only was I able to develop the particles, my research helped lead to a patent and additional funding for the project. Additional Responsibilities:-Performing Qualitative and Quantitative Research-Determine a Method of Tracking Man-Made Titanium Dioxide-Development of a New Particle (Lanthanum Oxide Core / Titanium Dioxide Shell)-Particle Size Characterization -Particle Analysis (Surface Properties)
