I am an overnight photojournalist at the local Fox affiliate in Denver. This means I arrive at work at 1:00 A.M. I grab my camera and police scanner, then hit the road. For the first half of my shift, I drive around looking for breaking news. That can mean fires, stabbings, burglaries– whatever happens overnight. Then, around 3:00 A.M. I get assigned a reporter. I then help the reporter find video for their story. We then go to our live shot location, where I light, mic and film the reporter throughout the morning show. Because I am alone for half of my shift– and sometimes all of my shift, depending on the day– I am an independent, self-motivated worker. I take pride in what I do and I strive to create a great product.

I worked for The Now, a national show put out by Scripps, in the Denver7 building. It’s basically a CNN news desk for our company. We put out content for our affiliates. After the producers wrote the stories, I then found and edited video to match. I had a strict deadline so the affiliates get the content in time for their newscasts. In addition to editing video, I also created graphics to match what the producers wrote. I also ran the TriCaster whenever we have live shots. I would come in for the overnight shift if there are morning live shots or stay late if it’s for the evening news.

I covered breaking news and spot news. I usually worked by myself gathering information to tell a story, but sometimes I worked with a reporter. Everyday I edited and shot either vosots, packages or natpackages, often all of them in one day. For the evening newscasts, I set up live shots for the reporters, using a live ENG truck or a LiveU.

I set up the studio before every morning newscast. Preparing the studio includes checking the lighting and the mics. I also ran prompter for the four-hour newscast, and then spent the rest of my shift shooting stories. I would also leave prompter for breaking news whenever it happened. I was promoted to full-time photojournalist not long after joining the Fox Carolina team.
