Our Father had spent his entire life in the trucking industry. Thomas Urso began as a dock worker in 1963 and he would go on to positions of driver, dispatcher, terminal manager, & operations manager. Bear Cartage was established in 1994 by our Father & Mother - Tom Urso with the help of his wife, Marie to start Bear Cartage with 5 leased vehicles, 3 employees, and a 1,000 square foot office. During the late 1990’s, the company grew rapidly. In 1997, Bear Cartage was featured in Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the Fastest Growing New Small Businesses in America. The company was also featured in the Winter 1996 issue of Illinois Truck News. Ironically Bear was featured in the Fall 2012 issue of the Illinois Trucking News featured as ITA Motor Carrier of The Year. Tom Urso selected the name Bear Cartage because Urso is derived from a Latin form of the word “Bear.” The choice of a teddy bear for the company logo was intended to promote the family-atmosphere of the company and the image of trucking as a kill you with kindness business. Bear has grown from a handful of employees & owner operators to a company with over 30 employees and 220 + drivers. Bear Cartage is proud of the fact that the employees and owner operators feel at home with Bear & enjoy the family atmosphere. We have always had an open door policy with our drivers. We have prided ourselves that we still have drivers with 20+ years ofExperience.
