About Anthony Virtue
I earned my Bachelor’s of Science degree from Ursinus College in 2005 and began my scientific career within the pharmaceutical industry performing pre-clinical drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics research at GlaxoSmithKline. Over the next four years, I was exposed to a professional research community which afforded me the opportunity to develop valuable laboratory skills, techniques, and methodologies. During this time, I also began to contemplate my long-term career goals and aspirations. I realized that I wanted to take a more proactive role in my career and contribute to the biomedical community through more biologically-orientated research. To accomplish this, I decided to attain a Doctor of Philosophy degree. I enrolled at Temple University which provided an excellent environment for intellectual growth and research training. My time there afforded me the opportunity to learn multiple biological disciplines including molecular biology, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology. I completed my graduate research within Dr. Xiao-feng Yang’s laboratory and defended my thesis in May of 2014. After graduation, I took the next step toward achieving my career goals by accepting a post-doctoral appointment within Dr. Jorge Henao-Mejia’s laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania. This position has gave me the chance to further develop as a scientist by strengthening my research skills and by broadening my intellect. My research focused on elucidating the biological processes that are at the center of the interface between the immune system and metabolism. Specifically, I examined the function of non-coding RNAs in the regulation of immune cells, metabolic pathways, and cellular/whole-body metabolism. Currently, I work as an Investigator at GlaxoSmithKline in the therapeutic area of renal diseases.
Listed skills include Pharmacology, In Vivo, Pharmacokinetics, Laboratory, and 16 others.
