The primary missions of the Biological Sciences Group were to: develop instrumentation, consumables and other tools to accelerate drug discovery research in small animal models; and to develop novel approaches for fermentation of biomass to fuels. • Built and managed a biological sciences R&D group with peak annual revenues of $1.8 million. Projects spanned a broad range of technologies including molecular and cellular biology, immunoassays, microbiology, and instrumentation development. • Co-invented, led development of, and led commercialization efforts for the SideView imagingmicroplate. Presented technical seminars and demonstrated technology at customer sites. Managed booths, demonstrated technology, and generated sales leads at International Zebrafish conferences. • Managed development of fieldable immunoassays and instrumentation to enable pre-symptomatic detection of WMD exposure. Delivered instrument hardware, detailed protocols, and clinical trial results.• Led development of assays and imaging instrumentation for predictive cardiac toxicity assays using embryonic zebrafish. Generated customer leads and potential strategic partners at the 2010 and 2009 Society for Biomolecular Sciences (SBS) meetings.• Led and managed programs to develop DNA and RNA aptamers for treatment of botulinum neurotoxin exposure and for improved cancer diagnostics. Developed rapid aptamer selection procedure.• Founded Innovative Metabolism Inc. (IMI) which developed technology that enables direct fermentation of biomass to ethanol and specialty chemicals without the use of enzymatic or chemical pretreatment. The company was spun out from PSI in Oct 2011 and operated until March 2014.
