I am a passionate mathematics educator and researcher interested in innovation in higher education.I serve as chair of the mathematics department, though my heart remains in the classroom. I have been recognized for excellence in teaching, implementing evidence-based active learning practices such as a flipped classroom. I also serve as a Faculty Fellow of the university's Center for Teaching and Learning, regularly supporting my colleagues and presenting on effective pedagogy.My research focuses on low-dimensional topology, particularly knot theory and its connections with 3- and 4-manifolds. I regularly mentor undergraduate research and am committed to investing in students from underrepresented backgrounds. I believe mathematics is for everyone and am blessed to serve at one of the nation's most ethnically and internationally diverse universities.I am also interested in the future of higher education given the challenges of rapid technological and social change. I have served as an executive officer of our faculty senate for the past years and am currently serving as chair of the faculty senate, giving me a broad view of the university and faculty governance.I believe in the enduring value of a robust liberal arts education that prepares graduates to be lifelong learners and engaged citizens. I believe the purpose of higher education is not just to prepare students for competitive careers but also to help students find their calling and grow in virtue, cultivating a love for the good, true, and beautiful. For this reason, I also believe in the value of faith-based higher education and often speak and write on the positive relationship between faith and reason. I am particularly invested in Adventist Higher Education and its distinctive vision of educating students for a Better World.
