Profile bio

About Anthony Da Costa

A well-rounded power electronics engineer, with a solid mechanical and complex systems background, excellent analytical skills ; I am also very handy and productive in the lab.My passion for electronics started at a young age.At age 12, recognized as gifted, I was invited to train regularly with a tutor on electronics, with whom I excelled. I learned soldering, PCB layout, testing and troubleshooting skills that I still excel at today.At 17, I qualified as one of 2000 students for France's engineering elite selection program ("Classes préparatoires - Physics and Technology").I rapidly completed the intense program in two years and ranked 4th after nationwide tests. Ecole Polytechnique, France's most competitive school of engineering, recruited top 10 nationwide.There, I got to perfect and deepen my analysis skills (Theoretical and Applied Mathematics, Simulation methods, Mechanics, Modeling).My broad background and experience gave me the skills to address complex projects at multiple levels and in several fields of physics and engineering : • Design : analysis of circuit topologies and regulation methods, modeling, performance and cost evaluation, passive and semiconductor components selection, magnetics design • Prototyping : proficient at switch-mode and mixed-signals circuit PCB layout assessing EMC/EMI issues, delivering quick-turn functional prototypes and rapid revisions. • Control : Proficient with the use of analog PMIC or micro-controller C code for low-level hardware control. Derivation of DC and AC-small signal models of power converters and regulators. • Testing and debugging : I have spent hours in my own workshop since age 12... I am very efficient in the lab, and excellent at troubleshooting and identify problem root-cause. Experience with voltages from 1V to 1kV, currents up to several 100 A, switching frequency of several 100kHz. Very creative at working in fast-pace and lean environments, often making my own debug tools.

Listed skills include Matlab, Internal Combustion Engines, System Simulation, Powertrain, and 26 others.

Systems Simulation Engineer || Hybrid Powertrain || Organic Rankine Cycle

Rueil Malmaison, Hauts De Seine, Fr

• Developed and deployed a highly flexible simulation platform for fuel-economy estimates, with minimal configuration parameters and no calibration requirements, supporting electric, hybrid, and conventional vehicles. Extensive use of the platform to support powertrain optimization in various applications (from conventional cars to military vehicles).• Successfully used this platform to provide technical powertrain design recommendations to achieve the French ministry 2L/100km fuel consumption goal, within 24h, to IFP's Director of Transportation.• Simulation of multi-cylinder diesel engine airloop, providing boundary conditions for mono-cylinder test bed measurements• Modeled Rankine cycle for exhaust heat recovery. Developed an optimization tool to select working fluid and optimal operation point to maximize efficiency under constraint (e.g. fluid flammability, max operating pressure, ambient temperature, ...).

Jan 2010 - Dec 2013

Apprentice || Powertrain Engineer

Rueil Malmaison, Hauts De Seine, Fr

• Assisted Project Leader for plug-in hybrid demonstrator project (budget: € 3M). Addressed large-scale system issues, concerning battery, power electronics, electric motor, drivetrain and internal combustion engine design constraints.• Led successful and fruitful concurrent design sessions with simulation engineers and integrators to optimize vehicle performances.• Built first thermodynamic model of piston Rankine expander (Matlab), and optimizing tool for expander sizing.
