On his first day, I asked him to attempt building a tool that would allow our company to find relevant geographical road changes using news articles and social media. The only requirement was that we use open source / free resources that could be applied within our commercial use environment and that he build it before the end of March. After 6 weeks, he had a working prototype. Early on, Tony told me that his front end development experience was minimal compared to back-end / machine learning work. I didn't give him more resources, just ask that he do what he could with his skills. At the end of the term, we had a fully working news reading service that could read thousands of articles and tweets each day. It could parse, categorize, geo-locate and prepare thee for human review (which was often not needed as the machine was able to get everything needed for our cartographers to take action). His self-managed time here exceeded our expectations. We intentionally gave a small clue in to what we needed and did not set required milestones, working hours or a timeline. Tony found his way navigating within our large company's talent base to find the answers he needed and execute on the plan effectively. On his last day, he presented an in-depth presentation to our engineering group on his work and the tools he used to deliver what we now proudly call Gunther.
