I’ve had the very good fortune of working with a number of gifted individuals who shaped my career and especially my life. I spend my time now as a writer and startup investor, attempting to help others however I can.In my past, I helped launch the Unisys open source practice - for which I was honored to be recognized by LinuxWorld magazine as one of the top open source business leaders. More rewarding to me was leading the teams responsible for developing some of the world’s most powerful supercomputers - one of which is in the Guinness Book for its performance. My work on these servers resulted in eight patents for various hardware and software innovations.At some point I fell in love with entrepreneurship and building companies - particularly those with a social mission to make a difference in the world. I joined a few boards and subsequently ran Healthy Humans, a healthcare IT startup connecting patients and caregivers around a model of collaborative health to reduce the incidence of chronic disease, partnering with some of the world’s top physicians. I am a co-founder of ROAR for Good, a wearable tech B-corporation focused on reducing assaults and empowering women.I was an early advisor and partner for TechGirlz, a nonprofit focused on reducing the gender gap in technology occupations. I developed and taught the career track curriculum for the Philadelphia chapter of Girl Develop It, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping women pursue careers in software development. I'm an advisor for Drexel’s HeForSWE, a coalition of men advocating for women in engineering and working with women to create an inclusive and diverse tech culture. The underlying premise is that by enabling doctors to easily empower, encourage, and track patient progress with care plans, much better health outcomes can be achieved – including lower overall costs of care. To help drive this mission of patient activation, along with Dr. Sylver Quevedo we wrote a white paper entitled “Meaningful Use and Patient Engagement” which was published by the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC) in their Transforming Patient Engagement: Health IT in the Patient Centered Medical Home journal. Many of these concepts are in use today for enhancing the way care is delivered and tracked.After joining Healthy Humans as CEO, I had the opportunity alongside an amazing board and management team to pivot the company from a direct-to-consumer model to a provider-focused enterprise SaaS business; and worked with many terrific people to lead the company through the tough economic climate to emerge as a recognized solution provider for large health systems. -
Vp & Gm, Open Source BusinessUnisys Nov 2005 - Mar 2009Prior to joining Healthy Humans, I spent much of my career at Unisys Corporation, the latest as Vice President and General Manager of the startup Open Source practice within Unisys Corporation. My time at Unisys was amazing, and being given the opportunity to create a startup business within an established giant like Unisys was incredible. Along with a spectacular team, we grew this business into what the press called, “Open Source’s biggest services gun” and what industry leaders noted as, “The largest Open Source Systems Integrator in the world.” With a team of nearly 1,000 personnel distributed across 100 countries, we built deep channels into several industries with particular emphasis on the US federal & state government, financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, and higher education sectors. Within two years of its creation, this business contributed over $100M in highly profitable revenue. The press took note of our accomplishments, and I was honored to be named as one of the “top business leaders who matter the most” by LinuxWorld magazine. This enabled me to speak around the world on the topics of open source, Web 2.0, mass-collaboration, and how businesses could most effectively leverage those trends. -
Vp/Gm, Es7000 SolutionsUnisys Corporation Nov 2000 - Nov 2005I was given a terrific opportunity to run the ES7000 enterprise server business at Unisys. The ES7000 was the world’s first Intel mainframe and holds several number one records for performance and price per performance. The ES7000 is also in the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest number of online CounterStrike gamers at the Dreamhack gaming conference. It was in this role that I had some incredible mentors when it came to leadership and learned the value of leveraging Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to build outstanding teams.

Vice President, Hardware EngineeringUnisys Jun 1988 - Nov 2000This is where I started my career. I began designing computers, mainframe computers that is. I found that job to be intellectually stimulating, but it (the job) was too far removed from the market and the customers. I had the honor and privilege of inventing, designing, and architecting several of Unisys’ best-selling mainframes. During my computer design years, I amassed eight patents around design and architecture. And, I once solved an extremely perplexing (and costly) mainframe problem by combing my hair.
