Served as an assistant coach for the Fair Lawn Varsity Football team, specifically assisting in Offensive Line and Defensive Line. Also, assisted in coaching the Junior Varsity football team. I learned through this process that coaching isn't just about winning games, it's about developing the lives of those that you coach. My responsibilities at the Engineering Management Institute prevent me from coaching today, but I look forward to coaching again in the future.

After being a very active member of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers for more than 10 years, the opportunity to become the Executive Director came about and I jumped at the opportunity.As the Executive Director, I focused on building a strong online presence for the organization to communicate and transmit the value that the organization provides. To summarize, among other benefits that NYSSPE provides to engineers in the State of New York, some of the key ones include:• Make engineering students in New York aware of the licensure process,• Assist engineers in maintaining their license by providing affordable continuing education,• Lobby on behalf of the engineering license in the State of New York to ensure that engineers can continue to protect the health and safety of the citizens of New York,I thoroughly enjoyed my time at NYSSPE and wish the organization all of the best going forward!

Once I started my company, I traveled across the US giving a talk I called “Take Your Engineering Career Wherever You Want to Take It,” in which I discussed the key skills that you should develop to become a well rounded engineer.The response to this seminar was so overwhelming that I decided to put the information into a book entitled, “Engineer Your Own Success: 7 Key Elements to Creating an Extraordinary Engineering Career.” The book became an Amazon.com bestseller when it came out in July of 2011, but more importantly it gave me more speaking opportunities to get my message out to engineers all over the world. Since I founded the company, I have visited with and spoken for thousands of engineers across the world.

Maser Consulting acquired JC & A when I graduated college, which worked out well for me because it gave me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had at a smaller company. For example, Maser supported me in obtaining my M.S. in Civil Engineering from Columbia University.I struggled early on in my career as many engineers do, just trying to figure out where I wanted to go in the industry and how to get there. One day, I had an epiphany and realized that most successful engineers have good technical skills and dynamic interpersonal skills. From that moment on, I focused on developing my non-technical skills like communication, networking and public speaking by reading every book and taking every possible training course on these subjects.I was promoted to an Associate at the age of 27 (the youngest in the company’s history). After my promotion, the company asked me to develop seminars to give to other younger engineers and project managers to facilitate their development. The enjoyment and success of this new venture lead me to go to executive coaching school and subsequently start my own engineering career development company – Powerful Purpose Associates which has evolved into the Engineering Management Institute.Key Take Away: Engineers should develop their non-technical skills as early and often as possible if they desire a management/leadership roles in their careers.

Throughout college I worked as an intern for a very small civil engineering company of less than 5 people.I spent a lot of time in the field performing land-surveying services. It was through this field experience that I gained a very practical perspective of engineering, which would prove to be invaluable in my work as a design engineer.The size of the company also gave me the opportunity to start to converse with clients at a very young age, which would help me to develop extraordinary customer service skills, which I utilize to this day.Key Take Away: Younger engineers and students should seek field/practical experience as early as possible in their engineering careers.
