About Anthony Garrison

Anthony Garrison-Engbrecht is a dedicated higher education administrator and educator committed to crafting transformative, holistic student experiences that meet students where they are and empower them to reach their fullest potential—currently serving as the Vice President of Student Affairs at the California Institute of the Arts. Previously, Anthony was Vice President of Student Life and Title IX Coordinator at Saint Mary's College of California. He has also served as the Assistant Vice Chancellor & Senior Advisor, and Chief of Staff at UC Merced. His journey in higher education administration also includes serving as the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the LEAD Center (Student Activities) at the UC Berkeley, as well as roles at Loyola Marymount University, where he served as the Director of Leadership Programs and founding Director of LGBT Student Services.Beyond his professional roles, Anthony has served as the Mentoring & Networking Chair of the Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators, represented Southern California for the American Education Research Association, and acted as the Southwest Regional Representative for the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals. Additionally, he has served on the boards of the Catholic Association for Lesbian & Gay Ministry, serving as treasurer, and the US–El Salvador Sister City Initiative.Currently, Anthony serves on the Board of Community Violence Solutions and maintains strong ties with his alma mater, Loyola Marymount University, by actively participating in the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Anthony is also involved in political advocacy, serving as a Victory Fund Campaign Board member, a national group of leaders actively helping elect more openly LGBTQ+ voices to public office. He is currently participating in the NAPSA Equity Leadership Academy, which brings together student affairs leaders to exchange insights on higher education equity. In July 2022, Governor Newsom appointed Anthony to the CA State Lottery Commission, ensuring the mission of providing supplemental funding for California's public schools and colleges is achieved. Anthony's educational background includes a BA in Sociology from Loyola University New Orleans, an MA in Education and Psychology from Pepperdine University, and an MA in Theology from Loyola Marymount University. He pursued graduate studies in Culture and Curriculum at Chapman University and Rural Education at Oregon State University, focusing his research on the impact of rurality and poverty on college access.
