Responsible for large scale initiatives like migrating the Cisco Umbrella Headend from Debian to Ubuntu including the build and canary environments, reviewing and securing the environment further by isolating network traffic to required ports per service, project managed the migration of 100+ Concourse pipelines to GitHub Actions and more recently tasked with migrating the on-prem GitHub repositories to GitHub Cloud. Improved CICD stability and visibility by enhancing the logging, enhancing the script responsible for selecting build nodes by having the script read directly from the AWS ASG for available nodes rather than an envar that would contain stale node IPs and rolling out a nightly build of all service’s images starting at the base images and building out to the most outer service image. Improving the GitHub Action environment by cleaning up the existing runners, introducing different instance sizes and updating the workflows to select runners that best fit the work being done on the runner. Threw together and demoed a new self-serve process to allow teams to replicate AWS AMIs across AWS accounts and regions; individuals can select which service image and version to replicate to which AWS accounts and/or regions of their choosing. Participated in on-call rotation, daily stand-ups, backlog grooming, sprint planning and contributing to the CNHE team’s roadmap.

Although hired to join the newly formed SRE team, my initial primary responsibility was a full stack Golang developer working on the SAML Login Broker component of the Umbrella product. Tasks included coding the new JWT endpoints, creating the CI/CD pipeline, architecting the resiliency plan, updating the Terraform and Serverless deployment plans and writing up Runbooks. As an SRE, I participated in on-call rotation, daily stand-ups, backlog grooming, sprint planning, and contributing to multiple team's SRE roadmap. I was responsible for defining and chairing cross-team the fire drill and breakathon processes; the initial steps to introduce Chaos Engineering. One of four embedded SREs on the Core Services team managing the infrastructure for the Service Aggregation Layer. Daily tasks could include managing deployments through Jenkins into the AWS EKS infrastructure, monitoring the infrastructure using Grafana and New Relic, maintaining services within the AWS EKS eco-system like Gradual Rollouts, attending daily team scrums and mentoring developers on SRE/infrastructure responsibilities. A few of projects I was responsible for included cleaning up the monitoring within New Relic and ensuring coverage of all SAL services, researching and architecting support of >4 million concurrent web socket connections to the SAL subscription service and improving the home grown Python based gradual rollout service within the SAL infrastructure to support multiple GR on multiple ingresses. Assisted the SRE Platform team to resolve bugs and clean up the development environment of the home grown SRE platform tool used by development teams to orchestrate their AWS EKS environments and Jenkins pipelines.

Performed both duties as Senior DevOps Developer and (acting) Development Manager for the API Gateway team. As the Senior DevOps Developer I was responsible for building up the release pipelines deploying the API proxies between Apigee environments, executing automated tests and validating deployments. As the (acting) Development Manager I was responsible for coordinating sprint planning, grooming, retros and daily standups as well as holding bi-weekly one on ones with the team; monthly one on ones with key people outside the API Gateway team to get guidence and direction. Worked with Product and Development management to pull together the API Gateway roadmap; giving the team direciton. In addition to my responsibilities as DevOps Developer and (acting) Manager, I coordinated the effort to come up with PayByPhone's REST API Design Guide to be used in standardizing the company's APIs going forward as well as facilitated system outage postmortem meetings; meeting coordinator, capturing information and performing follow ups.

One of two DevOps staff supporting the Predix Edge OS and Agent teams here in Vancouver, and the primary Release Manager for the Predix Edge Platform. Proposed and/or implemented changes to the development pipelines that have seen turnaround times decrease from 2 days down to the current 6 hours with the forecast for early next year being 3.5 hours. Designed and implementing the Last Known Good integration pipeline that deploys all the latest artifacts from the various teams and executes all system tests to validate the integrity of all the Predix Edge Platform components working correctly together. Responsible for designing and training the various development teams on the new Predix Edge Platform release process and bringing clarity to the release of the Predix Edge Platform. Chaired daily release meetings and coordinated deliverables from the various teams across sites to meet release milestones.

Currently focused on upcoming workflow and procedures for deploying Wine Direct microservices into AWS Elastic Beanstalk and utilizing AWS Parameter Store for the management of application configurations/secrets as well as using Application Load Balancers (ALB), EC2 instances and Aurora RDS instances. Prototyped a wrapper utility for the AWS and Elastic Beanstalk CLIs initially using Go, but later re-wrote it in Ruby (due to larger support base within the company) and the Ruby AWS SDK to setup guardrails when working with Elastic Beanstalk environments and the Parameter Store. Evaluated AWS Cloud Formation against Terraform, but ended up choosing Terraform as the tool for managing our Infrastructure as Code. Cleaning up and standardizing the legacy AWS environment and utilizing Terraform for managing and deploying the standards put in place. Deployed AWS Guard Duty across all accounts and removed security holes based on the results of the monitoring. Participating in scum and sprint planning meetings as well as bi-weekly on-call coverage.

This includes the management of the main Jenkins server, build slaves, defect tracking systems (Bugzilla), revision control systems (SVN and CVS) and code analytical software (Coverity and Protecode). Secondary responsibilities include maintaining the SVT Testcase Database web application, performing quarter activities to coordinate and upload company IP to a third party quarterly for escrow, holding bi-weekly meetings with IT to discuss issues and roadmap items, and attending weekly CRB meetings. My projects have included, but not limited to the restructuring of the engineering environment to introduce standards across the environment making it easier and quicker to manage and monitor, customizing Bugzilla's interface to support the ODC requirements, evaluating the migration of the source code to other revision control systems, and the setup of the Protecode analysis server.

My current project has me working on componentizing the code base of the organization as part of a shift in our development processes. I was responsible for the development of a new make framework using GNU Make, a centralized database using MySQL and a Perl based tool that manages the componentization process of the new build environment. Two spin off utilities are being written to support this new environment; one that will wrap Git on the clientside and automates the many of the workflows a developer will go through in a day, and the other is a tool for administrating the Git servers automating many of the processes the Git administrators face each day. Both tools are Perl based, with a very heavy focus of object orientated design including the dynamic loading of Perl modules at run time based on the contents of a folder. The project before was a prototyped web based application/portal to provide a visual presentation of the build and test services and act as a single point of management of these services. Another prototype written using the same web based technologies as the build test portal was a tool for bridging Bugzilla and Microsoft Dynamics CRM system. The first project I owned was the creation of a web based tool to assist with the migration of defects from Rally, Trac and the old Bugzilla server to a new server. I development many other tools and reports in between projects, and migrated code from old SVN repositories to Git. And lastly, I was involved in code reviews and mentored fellow team mates.

Audited the environment, established a central server room and rolled in standards to the build server environment. Wrote and maintained build scripts in Perl as well as tweaked third party Perl modules so they built successfully on multiple platforms. Secondary responsibility was the delivery of the Perl Enterprise product.

Originally hired to migrate the Desktop Driver team from Continuus to Perforce, then assumed the roll as Senior Configuration Engineer and team lead responsible for the day to day operation of the Perforce server and SCM needs of engineering. Developed several tools and scripts to assist in the auditing and maintenance of the source code repository. Performed training sessions to educate new hires how to use our tools and work within our development environment. Setup the initial Linux build system to work within the existing Windows build system.

Team lead and responsible for managing day-to-day operations of the SCM/builds plus engineering intranet teams. Took an automated build process from weekly to daily by normalizing the build environment and streamlining the process. Designed and managed the development of the engineering intranet. I also educated many of the people on my team about UNIX, Perl Scripting and web development.
