This theme of instruction addresses significant objectives of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The DJIIMO emphasizes using critical thinking, analysis, and problem solving to explore the application of Joint doctrine. By applying these principles to a complex problem set, students develop a perspective of leadership at the operational and strategic level of the Department of Defense.I facilitated learning in the classroom using Discussion Teaching -the foundation of the Harvard Business School's renowned case method of instruction-- a powerful tool for developing skills as well as conveying knowledge. In the give and take of discussion, students go beyond abstract understanding to the active application of important principles to include the value of their career and personal experiences. They are confronted with the same kind of ambiguous, ill-structured problems they will face in their professional lives.
