As an instructor in the Department of Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational Operations (DJIIMO), I provided instruction for senior enlisted members of our Armed Forces and our Allies at the graduate level to become agile and adaptive leaders who are critical and creative thinkers, able to produce viable options to solve operational and strategic problems.DJIIMO is an integral part of the SMC foundation for Joint Professional Military Education (JPME). By applying these principles to a complex problem set, students develop a perspective of leadership at the operational and strategic level of the Department of Defense.I facilitated learning in the classroom using Discussion Teaching -the foundation of the Harvard Business School's renowned case method of instruction-- a powerful tool for developing skills as well as conveying knowledge. In the give and take of discussion, students go beyond abstract understanding to the active application of important principles to include the value of their career and personal experiences. They are confronted with the same kind of ambiguous, ill-structured problems they will face in their professional lives.

U.S. Army Penn State Fellow
The United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA) Fellowship is the Army’s premier noncommissioned officer degree and instructor certification program aimed at sergeants major who have potential and a strong desire to be an educator for our future sergeants major. Selected candidates pursue a Master of Arts Degree in adult education through Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). The Masters Degree is a 33-semester hour online program focusing on the knowledge and skills required to develop professionals who work with adult learners.Fellows are future Army senior leaders and must be capable of interaction with the federal government, the private sector, and academia. Thirteen years of conflict has demonstrated that the future battle space will continue to grow in complexity and bring amplified intellectual challenges, therefore an educated force of leaders and senior leaders is required. Chief of Staff of the Army states that we must be “Cultivating Strategic Perspective and Leadership from Senior Noncommissioned Officers”…. educate and develop all Soldiers and Civilians to grow the intellectual capacity to understand the complex contemporary security environment.” The Penn State program along with the other strategic broadening seminars is one of many steps to build a cadre of future senior NCOs capable of providing sound strategic level advice to their leaders.
