Implementation of innovative technologies and good agronomic practices in sugarcane: Driving Nigeria’s potential towards self-sufficiency in sugar production. Our goal is to produce 15 mt of sugarcane from cultivating high-yielding sugarcane varieties on 150,000 ha across Nigeria, translating into 1.5 mt of refined sugar annually.Responsibilities:-Evaluation and recommendation of sustainable agronomic practices (fertilizers, herbicides, irrigation) and schedules for productivity increase, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability-Identification of high-yielding varieties for multiplication Key achievements:◦Increased sugarcane productivity by 8 % within the first year through the appropriateness of varieties, fertilizer and weed management ◦Identified six promising varieties that increased yield by 5 – 10 % in the first year ratooning.◦Evaluated and validated a pre-emergent herbicide with weed control efficiency of 98%. ◦Improved soil fertility (high organic carbon) through organic and mineral fertilizers.
