Designed to acquaint students with all aspects of virology, the course examines viral transcription, classification/nomenclature of viruses, the origin/evolution of viruses, and prions. Detailed analysis is conducted in emerging viruses, the role of viruses in cancer progression and vaccine development. Laboratory exercises explore several techniques in virology including the isolation, purification and growth of bacteriophage. Credits: 4BIO 635 - The Evolution of Consciousness This course explores the nature of phenomenal consciousness and the empirical divide between conscious and unconscious mental states, all viewed within a neuroevolutionary scope. The course will be anchored by the most recent studies on cognitive science and students will tangentially explore consciousness from various disciplines including physics, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, religion, philosophy, etc. The biological role of qualia will be introduced along with an evolutionary timeline of neurological advancement from Haikouichthys to Homo sapiens sapiens.
