I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. At an early age, I launched a contracting company, scaling up to hire 8 employees. We consistently generated annual revenue of $200-$300k. Sadly, when the Great Recession hit, I was forced to shutter my business. Soon after, I discovered opportunity to acquire and manage a hair salon in a sordid neighborhood that was used as a refuge for criminal activity. Vision is defined as “the act or power of imagination” … I curated a vision for the hair salon where I could restore the neighborhood’s dignity and identity free of criminality; and instead focus on serving local families and creating jobs for the community. This vision spawned action, I remodeled the shop, purchased new equipment, and most importantly spearheaded the arduous culture shift that was the most necessary part of the lasting change I wanted to create. As a result, something truly remarkable happened: My vision became reality as not only did the shop’s employees embrace this paradigm shift, but the entire neighborhood got behind the once distressed haven for the criminal element. The hair salon was a huge success and became one of the most admired in the area. I later sold it for a tidy profit but what meant more than the money was the lasting positive impact on the community. Currently, I am preparing for my next foray into the entrepreneurial world. According to the American Trucking Association, the trucking industry could need more than 160,000 drivers by 2030 with the driver shortage in 2021 reaching more than 80,000 drivers. In America, 72% of tonnage is transported by trucks. As such, I see opportunity that compels me to pursue my Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and begin to drive On The Road freight across the lower forty-eight states. I intend to drive for a year to continue to learn the industry while beginning to secure capital so that my vision can be realized… acquiring a fleet of semi-trucks. I intend to design a program in jails and prisons for people who have demonstrated a strong desire to change whereby they will study for the CDL while incarcerated, take the test upon release, and begin a year-long apprenticeship to learn not only the trucking business but valuable life lessons through mentorship. I truly believe that the happiest people are those who are intentional about making the world a better place. I put people before profits and am a natural leader who can unite those who share common goals, as I believe we are stronger together.
