A 3.8m mixed use development involving the removal of an existing ground floor. In order to achieve this, I managed the exploration of the ground beneath to remove any and all obstructions from two previous buildings. Ultimately, this called for the removal of brick foundation structures dating back to the 1940s and concrete elements from the 1970s, all of which resulted in a variety of challenges which had to be monitored. I managed the team as they dug down through a former road and paid close heed to safety regulations as the area contained services such as hydrant lines, water and gas mains and all other utilities. Each was suspended using a temporary works frame that spanned from either side of the existing basements and the utilities were then hung from this framework. The team removed soil to the designated level after which the archaeologists took over and hand dug to the desired formation level. This involved a great deal of communication and cooperation between myself and the main archaeologist to ensure we were removing the spoil and maintaining a safe excavation. Once the desired level was reached, the existing pile wall was broken out using a brokk and as both sides were opened, the tunnel was then formed. Back filling then took place to eventually allow a sub-contractor to re-lay the road. Show less

An exciting £14m hotel build, this project involved the removal of the vast majority of the existing basement walls and the recycling of the remaining structure. A new RC frame was then put in place. Detailed delegation was crucial on this site given that it was adjacent to a London Underground station as well as a listed church. I coordinated with staff from both daily (namely LUL) to ensure that they were well informed on the details of construction taking place at any given time and… Show more An exciting £14m hotel build, this project involved the removal of the vast majority of the existing basement walls and the recycling of the remaining structure. I was site manager on the first phase which involved the construction of a double basement and ground floor. This involved a great deal of muck removal and piling. I managed concrete gangs, large pours and the placement of concrete and pre-cast elements all within a tight schedule. For the first time, I had the opportunity to take on primary responsibility of health and safety and environmental procedures and this is a professional strength and passion that has remained with me ever since. Here, I gained hands on experience with the core processes of setting out the vertical, horizontal and pre-cast elements on site, levelling of decks and vertical elements and forming concrete cubes for testing. It was also my responsibility to ensure that the drawings register was up to date.
