About Anthony Caldera

My dream job was to be a math teacher. I recall the sinking feeling I had on my first day as a rehab technician, a few months removed from a teaching position at Cal State Los Angeles, arranging my tools on a workbench. I had a master’s degree in mathematics and it meant absolutely nothing. To say it was “humbling” would be an understatement. I studied mathematics and music in college. I first entered the job market while the Great Recession was raging. My first big-kid job was teaching mathematics at Cal State LA, followed by the abovementioned post fixing wheelchairs at a rehab company. I continued this nonlinear career trajectory by working as a demand planner at a greeting card company. The next stop was a kid’s clothing company where I led strategies to distribute inventory. I ultimately entered the insurance industry by joining Esurance as a Forecast & Planning Analyst. The intent was to learn data analytics, something I was keenly interested in, while also learning insurance. Data strategy is my new obsession.I love stepping into the new. Being the least knowledgeable person in the room means I’m learning the most. I would not trade this crooked career path for anything, nor any of its accompanying shots to my ego or late nights studying up on a work topic. It’s one of the happiest accidents I can call my own. In my spare time, I love running, reading and playing with my kids. Two book I strongly recommend are Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” and Kurt Vonnegut’s “The Sirens of Titan.”
