While in high school I would escape the orchestration of my prescriptive suburban community, and bicycle for miles along the New Orleans lakefront and then south toward the river, passing through rows of shotgun homes before arriving at dawn in the French Quarter. It was a fascination with the character of “the quarters” and how it was continually translated by the smells, sounds, and shadows of this architecturally unique space that drew me back so often and eventually resulted in my exploration, through art, of the power and appeal of simple shapes. In 2008, I began showing my work, which includes open and closed vessels, teapots and wall sculptures. Several of my pieces are in private and corporate collections, including the Fleur Bresler Collection and the permanent collection of The Kamm Teapot Foundation. Although best known for unique, slab built wooden teapots, my wall hangings reflect a fascination with and ongoing exploration of simple, and more recently, complex intersections, which I considers the “roux” of compelling design. Although I hold a number of degrees, as an artist I am largely self-taught, having benefited from observations of, and associations with, accomplished artisans. I maintain a studio in the Soulard district of St Louis, finding both purpose and expression as an artist-maker. I return to New Orleans often, however, and remain an avid bicyclist.
