• Conducted research on the capability of Methylohalobius Crimeensis (a halophilic methanotroph) to biodegrade ethylene and naphthenic acids (two toxic substances found in tailings lakes) which resulted in identifying a more effective and cost-efficient bioremediation alternative.• Gained proficiency with utilizing the GC-FID, GC-MS, and PCR machines, and gained experience with techniques such as RT-qPCR, spectrophotometry, the use of primers, RNA and DNA extraction, SDS-PAGE, bacterial culture creation, bacterial inoculation, and other standard laboratory techniques.• Through GC-MS and GC-FID, proved that ethylene and naphthenic acids have an inhibitory effect towards the methane consumption pathway and the growth of M. crimeensis.• Through RT-qPCR, proved that M. crimeensis can co-metabolize ethylene via a hypothesized alkene catabolism operon, and completely biodegrade it at lower concentrations (most optimally at around when 0.125% ethylene is present in the environment). The gene expression levels increased by 23X when ethylene was introduced into the environment of M. crimeensis, thus breaking from the traditional view that methanotrophs solely use methane as their carbon and energy source. • Composed a 46 page in-depth honors thesis which was presented to a panel of judges, fellow students, and faculty. This research is scheduled to be published in a peer-reviewed journal in the near future.
