I was employed under the Energy Unit - Natural Gas Market Sector - Midstreams and Operations Permitting Unit. Main job responsibilities were focused around permit compliance on construction sites which have stormwater permits. I was available and able to handle emergency situations when a site became an imminent danger to life and/or health according to emergency response procedures to spills or releases of pollutants, some of which may have been hazardous substances. I coordinated with all other state and federal agencies to ensure that all legal documents are in full compliance with all relevant air, waste and water laws and regulations. I may have also conducted other related duties as necessary or assigned.
Environmental Inspector
I was assigned to the Division of Water Waste Management, Office of Environmental Enforcement. Under limited/direct supervision, I worked in an inspector capacity in the performance of technical and field inspection work related to the non-point source pollution program and other water pollution control programs, pertaining to all phases of stormwater. The primary focus of my job was related to concentration animal feed operations (CAFO) and animal feed operations (AFO). Additional inspection and enforcement duties construction, sediment, and erosion control. Stormwater related duties included but no limited to construction stormwater (CSW), industrial facilities, municipal storm sewer system (MS4), combined sewer overflows (CSO), and sewage system overflows (SSO). Duties also included compliance evaluations of home aeration units (HAU's) on a limited basis. Made regular inspections of sites and facilities to determine compliance with laws, rules, regulations, permit conditions, etc. I investigated complaints pertaining to suspected environmental harm from regulated or non-regulated sources associated with stormwater. I was also responsible for initiating and following up on appropriate enforcement actions for non-compliance, including sampling, use of sampling equipment for laboratory analysis and related reports. Other duties were performed as assigned.
Graduate Research Assistant
Responsibilities included: Field work, laboratory work, and professional presentations all related to soil science. I coordinated and executed field work on a reclaimed surface mine in Birch River, Webster County, WV. The purpose of the work was to determine the true hydrologic soil grouping of reclaimed minesoils at the site. Factors of this determination were: rainfall, slope, forested vs. grass cover, bulk density, compaction, texture, and other soil related characteristics. Soil and water samples were collected over a period of approximately one and a half years. I was in charge of collecting samples, running analysis, and coordinating help from undergraduate students when needed. Completed work was presented as professional presentations in both in-state and out-of-state meetings. I successfully defended my thesis in October 2010.
