Helped build engineering teams and new products using the best possible combinations of open-source and commercial technology. Provided a leadership role that involved teaching team members better design skills and agile methodologies in both object-oriented (Java) and functional programming (Clojure).

I was asked to be the CTO at NAVIS when their prior one did not work out. Due to various circumstances at this particular company I preferred taking that job as an interim role while I helped them find a replacement. During this time I managed a department of about 35 people, helped with technical strategy, budgeting, and stabilizing the reorganization.

I wore many hats in this position. I was responsible for writing iOS and Android apps, development of agile methodologies, establishing engineering practices, the server infrastructure design, system administration scripts, email infrastructure, training administrators and engineers, and developing software using Java, Scala, Javascript, Perl, Angular, Objective-C, and related technologies.

TeamUnify had started out as a start-up in a house in Bend. When I started working for them they had a CTO that was writing all of the code and trying to admin systems (remotely). He was overtasked to say the least. I came in and took over all systems management, mobile software development, and many other things. I essentially built the engineering department from the ground up. After a few years they promoted me to VP of engineering, and I continued to more formally run engineering.

Did research related to software concurrency. I co-authored a paper that was accepted at OOPSLA http://cgi.di.uoa.gr/~smaragd/tic-oopsla07.pdf and presented it in Montreal.

Responsible for Linux system administration, and streaming media server management. This did not take much of my time so on the side I rewrote the University's webmail system using C++ and Perl. They used it in production for several years.

Developed a spin-off of the hotel local information system from my prior venture, directed at city-level users. I was responsible for all technical development (servers, web software, etc.). Unfortunately at about this time Google started providing local search results that rendered this avenue of development obsolete.

Helped develop a business providing local information to hotel guests. The ideas and systems predated Google Local, and we were able to generate nearly $1M in investment money. The systems were deployed in several cities across Oregon. In this position I developed search software, distance ranking algorithms, embedded OS/hardware solutions (for in-room terminals), billing systems, and designed the deployment model for the physical plant of servers.

Developed curriculum for Java, C++, OO design, Linux, Perl, Javascript, and other topics. Taught programming and system administration. Developed a curriculum in Java that exceeded the pace and quality of Sun's own training courses during the dot-com boom and led to Sun Microsystems buying this company at the end of the decade.
