  • One On One Sports Training
    Coach/Trainer
One On One Sports Training Apr 2015 - Oct 2015
    Seattle
Coaching for One on One Basketball was a very interesting gig. I would spend 1 to 2 hours managing 20-30 kids and making sure they didn't break anything or get hurt. Minus the one kid not wanting to participate from time to time, it was easy to get everyone to participate in the activity on hand. Basketball was not the only sport that we offered for after school programs. Depending on what the school wanted, we would incorporate other sports in order to teach the kids how to play within the rules of the game and emphasize being a great teammate.I also got to do individual basketball training with kids and put on various camps during school breaks. This was what I enjoyed most working with One on One when it came to working specifically with basketball. There were a numerous amount of kids I got to work with that I helped train and prepare for the high school level. It also helped prepare me for my future coaching opportunities, where I would get to implement individual training and designing camps for different ages.
  • Boys And Girls Clubs Of North Seattle
    Lead Athletic Staff/Teen Coordinator

Post "Pro Basketball Life" led me here. After finding out how politics play a role in sports, I came back home from the Philippines to finish getting my degree at Seattle Pacific University. But before I ended up here, I did go back to FootAction for a year because my Philippine money ran out. What led me to this Boys and Girls Club (which is not affiliated what so ever with the first one I worked at) was my manager who I had worked under leaving.I was in search of working in sports. After all, I thought I was going to work in the basketball post grad. So searching through the University classifieds, I found a job in the athletic programs at the North Seattle Boys and Girls Club. As soon as I applied, I was hired on, which was perfect timing because there was no way I was working under a the new management who had just came on at FootAction. In my new position, I was adored. Probably more so because I kept boasting how I had played overseas in the Philippines so all the boys who were all trying to play at the high school level naturally gravitated towards me. But I was also given a lot of responsibility with programming for the different sports that we offered seasonally. It was a great first glimpse at what it took to be an Athletic Director and coordinating a program in general. So much goes into planning and getting the right people in who will make a positive impact for the program. I also learned the importance of being on the same page as a staff and the utilization of great volunteers! There was no way I was going to coach 8 different teams, as well as ref and coordinate where kids/volunteers needed to be. It was a great introduction on what management skills I needed to take with me into the so-called "Real World" post grad life. It also helped prepare me for the skills I needed in order to manage my OWN business!

  • Juanita High School
    Head Basketball Coach
Juanita High School Jun 2010 - Mar 2012
    Kirkland, Wa
My first team as a head coach. When you take on a team that hadn't won a game in 3 years, the expectation is really low. Coming from college and having gone through that already, this was no different than I had already been through. Morale was low, so all I had to do was build these guys up to prepare them for high school basketball. They overachieved in the eyes of the community winning 5 games their 8th grade year and almost knocking off the number 1 seed in the playoffs. Then in their freshmen year of high school, won a handful of games and again almost took out the top seed yet again. It was a rollercoaster 2 years, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. We didn't win a lot, but they improved on so many levels. They were the laughing stock of the league to becoming the team that had to be scouted because no one wanted to be upset by this group of guys and coach who came out of nowhere.I built the boys confidence on working hard day in and day out, believing in one another and being an absolute hard ass on them. Not letting them get away with being mediocre or half-assing anything they did in practice or games. They were a great group of boys that just needed someone to believe in them. I like to think that I was the difference maker, but they were ones that put it all together and once they fully bought in to what I was trying to teach them, they were unstoppable.
  • Shoreline Community College
    Men'S Assistant Basketball Coach
Shoreline Community College Sep 2008 - Jun 2010
    Seattle, Wa
My first coaching job. I really fell into this because a new coach came in and I hopped on and took advantage of it. It also looked good on a resume that I coached at the college level, which really did work to my advantage! It also helped that our Head Coach went to North Carolina, played and coached under the late great Dean Smith and had a helluva coaching background before coming to Shoreline. We went from not winning a league game in year 1, to winning the league Championship and being the #1 seed in year 2. And no, we did not cheat. We knew how to recruit and put the right pieces together that equaled a winning formula!Coaching at the JUCO level is one of the best places to learn. You have to to do everything with limited resources. Creativity is a must at this level and we had a very talented staff. We were all young, hungry assistant coaches learning from one of the best in the country. It shows now, because 2 of us are now at the high school level, at very respectable programs, and one is coaching at the college level. Couldn't be where I am now without this experience. Lesson here, take a chance and reach out even if you think you don't have enough experience. When someone gives you the opportunity, take advantage of it and be committed at all costs no matter how bad things may be or the situation!
